We are waiting patiently (or impatiently, maybe) for Apple to actually announce new AirPods, and we may be getting closer to that reality.
MySmartPrice has a report out on Monday that outlines a new Bluetooth SIG certification for two new AirPods models. The model numbers are A2031 and A2032, which seems to point to a specific model number for each individual truly wireless in-ear headphone. The certification doesn’t give us a lot to go on, but these new AirPods may be the version of the truly wireless headphones that offer support for “Hey Siri” without double-tapping on the headphone to activate.
Apple actually showed off that feature in September when it introduced the iPhone XS, XS Max, and iPhone XR, but didn’t launch the new AirPods with the feature baked in.
Interestingly, as pointed out in the new report, the new classification for these AirPods change things up a bit and offer more coverage for “general wellness instruments, namely, health, fitness, exercise, and wellness sensors”. The original AirPods don’t have this sort of designation, so it may be possible that Apple is planning on including something to fit this bill in its next version of the AirPods.
What we do know for sure is that Apple is also working on a wireless charging case for the AirPods as well, which would go right along with its wireless charging mat, what the company calls AirPower (but not on its website anymore). However, we have no idea if this new Bluetooth SIG certification is a precursor to that wireless charging case launching anytime soon, because it doesn’t mention the accessory in the filing. We were seeing references to the wireless charging case before iOS 12 launched, hinting at its impending launch. However, we’re still waiting for Apple to officially tell us anything about when we can buy it.
Apple didn’t announce any new AirPods at the September iPhone event, or at the October event where it introduced the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air (among other things). However, that doesn’t mean the company isn’t planning on launching the new option in time for the holiday shopping season.
Fingers crossed!
