As reported by MacRumors, based on an internal document that has been passed out to Apple Authorized Service Providers recently, it looks like, depending on the repairs needed for an iPhone 6, the company may be granting upgrades to an iPhone 6s Plus instead. According to the document, Apple states, “…orders for whole unit service inventory of some iPhone 6 Plus models may be substituted to an iPhone 6s Plus until the end of March 2018”.
As for the reason, that remains unknown at this point. Apple does not provide a specific reason for the potential switch, nor does it state which models are eligible — if there are certain restrictions in place. However, it has been previously reported that Apple is seeing battery shortages for the iPhone 6 Plus, due to the iPhone battery fiasco that led to $29 battery replacements, until at least the end of March.
This decision, to replace some iPhone 6 Plus models with iPhone 6s Plus units may be directly tied to that.
Considering there is no way of knowing right now what, exactly, the parameters are for the upgrade behind-the-scenes, you may not be eligible for the option depending on the amount of damage on your iPhone 6 Plus.
The battery fiasco is causing plenty of issues for Apple, even ones that might not have been forecasted like this one. Still, if Apple is indeed doing this, even if it is a necessity due to battery shortages, it’s a nice surprise to the customer who gets that newer smartphone.
