WhatsApp has been testing a feature that allows users to watch YouTube videos within the app itself. It seems like the update is now live with most users seeing the feature on their iPhones. The feature is pretty simple but incredibly helpful. When you’re sent a YouTube URL, the video will play directly in the app without navigating to the browser or the official YouTube app.
The videos will be played in PiP (picture in picture) mode or a floating window, allowing you to navigate the app without interrupting the video. The video will continue playing even if you change the chat i.e. if you go out of your existing chat into another conversation. This offers completely uninterrupted video experience and it is hoped that this feature will be expanded to voice notes as well.
WABetaInfo, which spotted this feature, claims that users need to be on WhatsApp version 2.18.11 to access this function. While iOS users have no control over downloading specific versions of an app, updating WhatsApp from the App Store should do the trick.
WhatsApp has added multiple new features over the past couple of years, with video calling and message deletion being some of the most important changes. This new feature is also quite important keeping user experience in mind.
