Another new report based on the supply chain sources of Macotakara claims that Apple will be switching to USB-C instead of Lightning for its upcoming iPad Pro lineup.
Mac Otakara is basing its report after talking to a number of accessory makers at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics Trade Fair in Hong Kong, with all of them believing Apple will be using USB-C instead of Lightning on its 2018 iPad Pro lineup.
Most accessory makers have based their case dimensions and designs on a leak that first appeared on SlashLeaks last week. The leak points to the 10.5-inch iPad Pro being 178.52mm wide and 247.64mm tall, while the bigger 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be 215mm wide and 280.66mm tall.
Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also claimed that Apple will switch to USB-C with its 2018 iPad Pro lineup. The port will allow the company to offer 4K video output with the iPad, something which existing models of the device are not capable of doing. Additionally, the device is expected to ship with an 18W USB-C charger for faster charging speeds.
The 2018 iPad Pro lineup will get a radical design upgrade that will see Apple reduce the bezels on the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch variants. The tablets will also ditch the home button/Touch ID and the 3.5mm headphone jack, with the former being replaced by Face ID which will be updated to work in landscape orientation.
The move will be a huge transition for Apple as it has always used its proprietary 30-pin or Lightning connector for iOS devices. The switch to USB-C port on the 2018 iPad Pro will help boost the adoption of the port among other OEMs and also give a huge boost to USB-C accessories market.
Apple has sent out invites for an event on October 30th where it is expected to unveil its 2018 iPad Pro lineup along with a refreshed Mac mini and MacBook.
