Analyst Expects Apple to Retain Three Sizes for 2019 iPhone Lineup, Predicts Strong iPhone XR Sales in China

This year, Apple introduced three iPhones with three different screen sizes, and while this is considered an “S” upgrade year, it sounds like Apple may not be planning any major design changes next year, at least as far as screen size goes.

According to the latest note from long-time Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which was shared to investors today, Apple is planning on not making any major changes to the sizes of its offered displays next year with the 2019 iPhone lineup. If that holds true, then we will see a successor to the iPhone XR and see it keep the 6.1-inch LCD display. Apple will also keep the 5.8- and 6.5-inch OLED displays in whatever handsets replace the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max next year.

Kuo is also predicting that the iPhone XR, which goes up for preorder soon in China, will have a remarkably strong presence in the Chinese market when it launches. This actually expands upon Kuo’s previous report, suggesting that replacement demand for the iPhone XR will outpace the iPhone 8 from last year. Kuo’s new prediction for iPhone XR sales is improved quite a bit, bumping up sales numbers to between 36 and 38 million devices. That’s up from the previous prediction of between 33 million and 35 million.

According to Kuo, Apple is doing just about everything right with the iPhone XR, especially compared to the iPhone 5C before it. Specifically, Apple’s adoption of the iPhone X-like physical design with the minimized bezels, the inclusion of Face ID, dual SIM support, and the comparable specs to the iPhone XS (and XS Max) are going to boost sales of the upcoming device in a big way.

Most recently, we heard that the 2019 iPhone lineup will retain the same IP68 rating for water- and dust-resistance. As far as the rumor mill is concerned with Apple’s 2019 iPhone lineup beyond that, we’ve now got this water resistant rumor to add to the mix, following along with rumors that we won’t see a 3D-sensing rear camera in the new lineup, and that the devices won’t boast a fingerprint reader on the display itself.
