Siri Shortcuts, which Apple introduced with iOS 12, is a great way to streamline a few different tasks, handling them all with just a single voice command.
The fact that Siri Shortcuts works with third-party apps is an added bonus. But Apple sees an even brighter future for the feature, especially as it relates to accessibility. Apple has built a variety of different features into its devices to aide in this effort already, but Siri Shortcuts present a unique way to handle other tasks as well.
Sarah Herrlinger, Senior Director of Global Accessibility Policy & Initiatives at Apple, commented on the role of Siri Shortcuts as it relates to accessibility for MacStories, saying that Apple sees a “huge accessibility potential”. Herrlinger notes that the feature is already helping people with different assistive needs, letting them streamline different tasks into a single request. This can help them get to work, or staying in touch with friends and family:
“We see huge accessibility potential with Siri Shortcuts and the Shortcuts app. It’s already making a difference — helping people across a wide range of assistive needs simplify every-day tasks like getting to work, coming home, or staying in touch with friends and family,” Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s Senior Director of Global Accessibility Policy & Initiatives, said in a statement. “We’re getting great feedback about how powerful the technology is in streamlining frequent tasks and integrating multiple app functions with just a single voice command or tap.”
Apple has been focusing on Siri Shortcuts as well, talking about the feature as often as it can in briefings and meetings. Apple sees a bright future for Siri Shortcuts, both as a tool for accessibility, but also just in general usage as well.
“In my briefings with Apple at WWDC and since, shortcuts has been one of the first items they wanted to discuss. Like Group FaceTime and others, the company firmly believes in shortcuts’ potential as an accessibility aid.”
Siri Shortcuts, if you haven’t tried them yet, are pretty fantastic. And considering this is Apple we’re talking about, it really can’t be said enough that it’s great the feature works with third-party apps right out of the gate, rather than getting added at a later date.
