Personal data is important, both in making sure it is secure and having access to it. Apple has made the first a priority for years, and now the latter is also becoming a possibility in more areas.
Apple today launched a revamped security portal on its site, outlining its efforts in clear language how it secures its customers’ data, while at the same time making it possible for customers in specific regions to download their personal data if they so desire. On Wednesday, Apple launched the ability for customers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States to download their personal data.
That means these customers can download any information that relates to their Apple ID, including photos, calendar entries, documents stored in iCloud, Game Center activity, purchase history, reminders, and more. That even includes AppleCare support entries. This is the same portal and download ability that launched for Apple customers in other areas, including the European Union, Norway, and other countries.
Apple says it will fulfill requests within 7 days.
We knew back in May that Apple was going to expand this functionality to other countries, expanding upon the rules that were set in place by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is worth noting that if Apple hasn’t launched this security feature in your region just yet, you can contact the company directly and request specific data you want access to, if it’s not already available via iCloud.
Our Take
The ability to download personal data is an important aspect of being a customer for these companies, if for no other reason than it gives the customer the clear ability to see what the company can see about the individual. Plus, having that backup is nice, too. It’s good that Apple is expanding this functionality beyond GDPR’s reach.
