If you were so inclined to buy a new pair of AirPods and you were in the United States (along with several other countries), you could do that without delay. But that’s apparently not the case for those in Europe.
Update: The AirPods are now showing up as back in stock and ready for immediate delivery again across the European Apple online stores. Fastest delivery sees the truly wireless headphones arriving Friday, October 19. No wireless charging case in sight.

A very strange incident has cropped up across Apple’s online stores in Europe, as was first reported on Wednesday by 9to5Mac. As the publication points out, Apple is showing the AirPods as “sold out” across its online storefronts in Europe. At the time of publication the company has not made any official announcements, and the truly wireless headphones were reportedly in stock and ready for immediate delivery just a couple of hours ago.
At the time of publication, Apple’s online store in the United States, as well as Canada, are showing AirPods in stock and ready for delivery.
A sudden lack of stock for a major product like the AirPods will obviously lead to some speculation. While there were some early rumors stating Apple would launch a new pair of AirPods in the second half of 2018, perhaps in time for the holiday shopping season, that is generally not expected to be the case any longer. Right now, rumor has it that Apple is going to launch new AirPods, “AirPods 2”, in late 2019, which may come along with a new pair of wireless over-ear headphones designed by Apple as well.
We also know that Apple is developing a wireless charging case for the AirPods, which was initially rumored to launch way back in the end of 2017. However, that didn’t happen and customers are still waiting. While it’s possible that Apple is planning a stealth launch of the wireless charging case for the AirPods, that seems relatively unlikely. Unless the wireless charging mat, AirPower, is also ready to see a public launch.
As it stands, there appears to be no reason for the sudden departure of stock for Apple’s AirPods in Europe. If the situation changes, we will update this post accordingly. And maybe keep your fingers crossed for that wireless charging case (and AirPower, for that matter).
