Amazon has had the Paperwhite line of Kindle eReaders around for quite some time, and the lineup is finally getting one of its most oft-requested features.
On Tuesday, Amazon officially announced the new Kindle Paperwhite for 2018. This new version offers up plenty of bullet points as far as features and specs go, including the fact this is the thinnest and lightest Paperwhite model to date, and a 6-inch display that supports 300 pixels per inch and is “glare-free”.
But the biggest new addition is right there in the title: The Kindle Paperwhite is finally waterproof. Amazon has always fancied its eReaders as a way to keep tabs on your personal library while at the beach or beside the pool, but many of its offerings didn’t have any block against potential water splashing on the gadget. Now the Paperwhite does, thankfully. In fact, thanks to its IPX6 rating, the new Kindle Paperwhite can be submerged in up to six feet of water for 60 minutes and still come out humming along.
And Amazon is doubling the available storage, offering an 8GB model and a 32GB model as well. If you want a 3G-enabled Kindle Paperwhite you’ll need to pick up a 32GB model, because there isn’t a 3G option with 8GB of storage.
Amazon says it has improved the backlight on the new Kindle Paperwhite as well, but it isn’t adaptive. The new model doesn’t support USB-C for charging, either, so be aware of that. But the new model does support Bluetooth-connected headphones or speakers, which should make listening to Audible books even easier.
As far as pricing is concerned, the 8GB WiFi-only Kindle Paperwhite retails for $149.99. Jump up to the 32GB WiFi-only model and you’ll need to fork over $159.99. If you want the 3G model with 32GB of storage, that will set you back $249.99. All three models are available to preorder right now through the source link below, and they start shipping on November 7.

The Paperwhite is finally waterproof. Better late than never, as they say. The other changes that Amazon made are certainly worthwhile as well, including the boost in storage. It’s a shame it doesn’t support USB-C, though, if for no other reason than we’re probably not going to see an update to this device for quite some time.
